The production on this record is way different than what I am used to. It’s a lot more raw and dirtier. I’m used to more produced records. But man, there is something about this that I enjoy. It’s probably that snare (which is still better than Lars’s snare on St. Anger). I believe the shining element for Certainly Demented, is they fit right in with some of the heavier hitting brutal death metal bands. Between the super gritty guitars, and the amount of blast beats. Don’t forget the toilet bowl sounding vocals. The mix, is surprisingly better than I anticipated. As dirty as the instruments are, only the guitars are mixed a little louder.
The song structures are pretty fast and erratic. From what I can tell, there is no set pattern. Since I don’t have lyrics, I can only assume they fit along with the usual topics of brutal death metal. Which is usually stuff like death, gore, and something about killing whores. I don’t think there is a constant theme of the whole record. Usually records that pertain to one theme, tend to blend seamlessly. You can definitely tell there is a separation of the tracks.
Now like I said, I’m not used to records produced and mixed the way this one is. But sometimes you need a record like this in your library. So I would definitely give this record a spin a lot more. They have some of my favorite things of brutal death metal. Things like, super heavy and fast riffs. They allow have some trash can sounding blast beats. I need more of that in my life. One thing I wish was different, was the recordings being a little clearer. In my personal experience, it would make it easier for the listener to follow along.
Overall, I do like this release. It’s a little grittier than what I’m used to. But its still pretty solid. It’s got heavy neck breaking riffs. It also has some of the nastiest blast beats I’ve heard in a while. If you’re a fan of simple but heavy brutal metal. Then this record is definitely for you.
