When I first heard this, I was a little turned off. Its a lot slower than what I normally listen to. But as I kept listening, and the vocals kicked in, I was hooked. Ive never really gave Doom Metal a chance. I don’t know what took so long. The production is a little different than what I’m used to. The whole album is VERY distorted. Now even though its not super clean, its still very good. It adds to the evil vibe the music it self seems to create. I think the shining element would be how they can balance the slow rhythm of doom metal, and kick it up a notch with some heavy death metal beats. My opinion on the mix goes right along with the production.
The song structures are what you normally are used to. There are a lot of drawn out instrumentals, which seem to help set the tone. Each song is a bit longer than the average Metallica song, and those top out at around 8.5 minutes. I’m not quite sure what the lyrics or theme is. I get the feeling that with the ominous music, there’s a lot of death, evil, and Satan.
Ive had this album on repeat all day. It’s so different for me that its become a favorite already. My favorite part is just how insanely heavy it is. My least favorite is when the record ended. But like I’ve stated in past reviews, that’s easily resolved by hitting the repeat button.
Now compared to their previous work, this record is a remix/master of their last album”Ephemerality”. Tracks 1-8 appeared on that album. Tracks 9-12 were previously unreleased 2011 demos. Tracks 13-18 are the original tracks from their first EP “Gut The Priest”. There isn’t much to compare to, they haven’t changed their formula, and I don’t think they need to.
Overall, I enjoyed this a lot. It’s slow and heavy, and very ambient and evil. It basically sounds like a horror movie sound track, or something that should play at a Halloween party. I’m definitely now a fan, and I look forward to their future.
