Please tell about your upbringing
I’ve been playing drums for 11 years and have been involved in music ever since I was about 5. I started on piano and branched off into other instruments later on but it was always my dream to grow up and be a musician just like my dad! I started playing drums when I was 15 and am 100% self taught. In my senior year of high school I auditioned on drums for the jazz band and got the spot. My first competition we won the award for best rhythm section! I continued to gain more experience playing drums in a live setting in front of an audience and big crowds. I fell in love with the feeling and the rest is history.
Who was the person who got you into metal?
The person that got me into listening to metal was my one good friend Matt whom I worked with in a restaurant with for a few years back in the day. He got me into bands like Chelsea Grin, Whitechapel, Carnifex, etc. Matt unfortunately died from a heroin overdose last year.
What bands were some of your early favorites?
Some early favorites are most definitely Slipknot, Dream Theater, Miss May I, As Blood Runs Black, Asking Alexandria, Children of Bodom, and Lamb of God.
Who are some of your favorite bands now?
Some of my favorite bands now I’d say would be Aborted, Pathology, Nexilva, Behemoth, Shadow of Intent, Periphery, and Ovid’s Withering.
Who inspired you to learn drums?
I was always fascinated by the drums. Joey Jordison & Mike Portnoy were the first drummers I ever saw and looked up to. My family inspired me to play the drums when they bought me my first drum kit as a surprise early birthday gift!
When did you join SOTS
have been in and out of different bands ever since high school. It wasn’t until 2016 when my one friend told me that Signs of the Swarm was looking for a drummer. Getting your foot into the music industry is very much based around social media networking and being at the right place at the right time. I am truly thankful and blessed.
Insert me here talking about how we first met lol
We first met at one our first shows in Illinois! ☺
Who were some of the first “heavy” bands you discovered
Some of the first heavy bands I discovered on my own that I really got into would be Veil of Maya and Born of Osiris.
How was your expierence on DOTN/ touring in general?
DOTN was literally amazing and a total dream come true! I am so thankful for all the opportunities I’ve been given with music. Every tour experience for me is a blessing.
Are there any plans for sots coming up? Recording? More tours?
SOTS hits Japan next January with Aversions Crown and Within the Ruins which I am beyond STOKED for! After that we have talks of hitting Europe and then Spring 2019 hitting the studio for album number3! ;)
What are some of your favorite foods while on your?
Favorite foods are definitely anything Mexican! I love tacos and burritos! Haha Other than that I’ve honestly been really trying to go Vegan. Save da animals! <3
Who’s the stinkiest person in the van?
Stinkiest person in the van is DEFINETLY Cory. His ass smells like a raw sewage plant lmao
What do you wish you could change about the metal/hardcore scene? What are some things that you hope don’t change?
I wish the metal/deathcore scene wasn’t always so toxic. Everyone always has something rude or negative to say and I’m so sick of seeing all the elitist posting or the flakey kids that only listen to a band because of the vocalist... Music is music! haha The positive vibes and supportive fans within the community are awesome though. Ya’ll are the real MVPS!
What are your goals for the future?
My goal for the future is to continue to be a positive role model/ inspiration to other drummers and musicians around the world. I would also like to be more of a mentor and teacher as well. I recently have started giving drum lessons in trying to move forward with achieving this goal.
Where are some of the places you hope to travel?
Places I’d hope to travel and hopefully travel soon are Rome, Italy, France, and Germany!
Anything else you would like to add? Where can people find you on social media?
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to partake in this fun little interview and thank you to all the fans that stuck around and continue to listen to us! New SOTS will be our best work yet! You can find me on any of my social media sites below!
