Symphonic Black Metal
Label: Nuclear. Blast
Location: Oslo, Norway
FFO : Behemoth, Cradle of Filth, Immortal
This record, is easily the best work from Norwegian symphonic metal titans Dimmu Borgir. It captures elements from their past discography. It’s a great listen. New and old fans alike will find this record captivating and enjoyable.
I think the quality of the production on ‘Eonian’ is perfect. Every note from the guitars, every thud on the drums, and every word from Shagrath’s voice are all clear and understandable. The over all mix of the record is perfect. It’s blended in such a way that no element is overpowering.
There wasn’t much of a theme like their past releases, at least that i noticed. No song was super complicated. Eonian is definitely a slight side step from their 2010 release ‘Abrahadabra’. Though it is sonically different, they still somehow provide an Eerie feeling throughout.
This record is easily one that a fan can spin more than once. I won't lie to you, personally i feel Eonian is lacking lyrically. Some tracks touch on topics such as controlling and discovering yourself, to overcoming the darkness to rise. Even though the lyrics seem a little blah, they are arranged and sung in a way that i cant stop listening.
My favorite part of Eonian, is probably the track ‘Council of wolves and snakes’. It took a few listens, but man did it grow on me. It starts off slow and somber. Then the primal drum beats and atmospheric Mongolian sounding throat singing starts, and completely hooks you in. It’s just such an evil sounding song.
My least favorite part of the record, its how i personally feel it is lyrically lacking. While i feel like it could use some more evil and aggressive lyrics, it doesn’t take away from the overall feel.
Compare to previous record ‘Abrahadabra’ it's a little lighter while maintaining the Erie symphonic tones. There are a considerable amount less blast beasts and double bass. They make up for it in the atmosphere. They arrange each track (orchestra, symphony, and the bands instruments) in such a way that they do not need to be fast, to prove they can provide a masterpiece.
In conclusion, i think this record is still a solid listen. Eonian captures elements from simple guitar tones, to the fantastic orchestra/symphonic arrangements, from their previous elements. It was well worth the 8 year wait. I will wait another 8 years if i absolutely have to.
