Malicious is a new band in the scene, showing us a taste of what they got with their debut EP ‘Red Flag’. From a production point of view, it’s 2020, and they meet the standards of what a new band is capable of nowadays. So I’m glad they can offer us the quality any metal record deserves. The mix is adequate along with it, but doesn’t cause anything in particular to stand out to me.

When this thing began, it was sounding good. Aggressive, forward, and charging on. However, after the end of this only 2 and a half minute opening song, we got the chorus twice in the first half, and the second half was just the same chugging with the same lyric the entire time. It was one big build up that resulted in, well the end of the song. No breakdown, second verse, not even the chorus again. So at this point I was pretty mixed on how I felt about these guys. Well there’s more to this EP so I continued on. The next song was much more interesting and diverse. Now that isn’t saying much when looking at the first song I am comparing it to, but regardless, better. And to be honest, that’s how the rest of this EP made me feel. “Well, it’s not great, but it’s something.” Because a majority of songs had a lot of repetitive riffs and a one straightforward vocal tone that started to make everything sound the same. There’s nothing unique or ear catching to me about the vocals nor the guitar tone. Each song felt the same because of this. In turn, only got worse as it went on because I felt like I was listening to the same thing with slight alternatives 4 times in a row. ‘Wintered Trees’ was the black sheep, being it was the longest, most diverse, and had some atmosphere and great playing to it. The lyrics at the least seemed to have some decent meaning and story to them consistently throughout this.

I can’t say this has much replay value, none for me personally. I much rather see these guys release a more diverse and well structured/written LP. Being this is their debut EP, it’s a decent start but they have a long way to go if they want to stand out in my opinion. ‘Red Flag’ is a fine listen if you want to check out a young band with potential, and follow along with them on their journey.
