FFO: Death, Bolt Thrower, Benediction

Requiem for Mankind is the third album by Memoriam (a mix of Bolt Thrower and Benediction). Death metal is probably my favorite sub genre right now and it hasn’t seen too many releases this year. Death metal fans like to keep it traditional and old school, I think Memoriam has that covered with their latest release. Coming in at just under 50 minutes with 10 tracks, Requiem for Mankind kicks off “Shell Shock.” The lyrics portray a bloody battlefield of… dead bodies and likes. I think the lyrics lack a little bit, I would have expected a little more… detail for an opening track, but I also tend to go towards more progressive or extreme metal with heavier lyrics. While I wasn’t fully satisfied lyrically, I was pretty cool with the riff and definitely felt, “the groove.” I was actually really shocked - sorry- that Karl Willetts sounded like a heavier version of Peter Steele on “Shell Shock.”

I felt “Undefeated,” the second track on the album, a lot more than the first. I think lyrically it was much more satisfying and had a more old school rhythm. From here, there was much more flow to the album. The tracks seemed to line up with each other both lyrically and musically. I could tell that there was a theme of (I would hope so for a death metal album)… death, defeat, and chaos. In terms of the theme of death, it was more mature than most other old school death metal albums.

I don’t know how much would I replay this album. I would for sure play some tracks from it, but not sure about playing the whole album through. That’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy it. I wasn’t very impressed by the lyrics right off the bat, but they did improve as the album progressed. Lyrics are a big deal for me. Some people put more value in the rhythm and riffs. I like a perfect balance of the two.

I really haven’t listed to much of Memoriam so I had to do a little digging on these guys. To me, this album was more crafted than the previous ones. When I need to do research on a band’s performance and such, I always check out to see if they have a Wacken video. So I was able to gather a little bit from Memoriam’s Wacken performance in 2017. If you’re an old school death metal fan and looking something new that also has that more traditional sound then definitely check out Requiem for Mankind.
